Re: not staying asleep

@Brownbear  Hi Brownbear you are not alone. I talk on the forum when I cannot sleep. Luckily for me I have a neighbour who cannot sleep so we go out for early morning walks together which is nice. It is a tough one.

Re: not staying asleep

Hey there @Brownbear this is a very relevant question, I think a few of the forum members struggle with this one. I have heard journalling for twenty minutes before bed can be super helpful for a solid, much longer sleep. Have you tried this before?

Re: not staying asleep

I was told about keeping a sleep journal by the OT so going to do that

There is not enough to do at night 😔 brutal

Re: not staying asleep

Listen to the radio, put on a DVD, make a cup of tea,do a bit of reading, pet the cat. Dont stay in bed ,get up and do something like some cleaning, prepare a meal for the next day. Do some kind of indoor exercise or if it is safe go for a short walk. Dont do any thing that makes you have to use your brain it only keeps you awake even longer. @jay2

Re: not staying asleep

hi @Brownbear
I have chronic insomnia so a an hr or so a night or a night or 2 with no sleep is normal for me however uneasy that may be

have your drs prescribed anything for sleep? theres a few different medications out there. if not theres also consulting with someone such as a naturopath who specialises in natural suppliments and is very cautious of prescribed medicaions as well.
essential oils are also fantastic and are what help me to relax enough to sleep even for short periods of time.

when im not able to sleep I still try to stay in bed and at least rest. resting is really important esp when sleep evades us. I listen to some music, put my essential oil diffuser on and try abit of guided meditation or have a cup of tea and read a chapter of my book. sometimes I play some games on my phone or check through my social media accounts as well.
sometimes putting on a movie but laying with my eyes closed is ok too and can all asleep if theres abit of background noise too

Re: not staying asleep

Hi @Brownbear   sleep is a major issue for me too.  I sleep in short bursts and am really lucky if I get 3 hours in one nap.  Most nights it's at least 5 or 6 x 1-1 1/2 hrs.  I do my best to practice 'sleep hygeine' guidelines which you might like to google.  This is a good place to start :  https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/docs/Info-sleep%20hygiene.pdf

For me one of the most important things is avoiding all blue screen activities between 10pm and 6am at least.  I get back to sleep a lot faster since doing this.  Also I saw a sleep specialist some years ago and he said that lying in bed in the dark with your eyes shut is nearly as good for you as actually sleeping.  At those times I will often do some sort of mindful breathing exercise too.  But if I can't sleep for more than half an hour I will get up and do something quiet and relaxing for a little while.  Then go back and try to sleep again.

Hope some of this is helpful.

Good on you for starting this thread.  Insomnia plagues many of us on the forums.
