Re: would sane consider these changes to the forums

It would be great if we could keep it here as I have subscribed to this thread so I can collate all the feedback. This thread is also been reviewed by others in the organisation.

I have collated feedback from emails which members have sent in the past, but having it all here is great.

Is that okay with you @Flutterbug9 ? I'm open to other thoughts too.

We'd love to hear from you.

@tyme  Small gripe to start with, and I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but can we please fix the forum's New Post forms so that your published post actually looks like what you type into the text box? Particularly with regards to paragraphing?

Single-space paragraphs that look all run-together in the posting form come out double-spaced, while normal-looking double-spaced posts come out quadruple-spaced.

And you see the consequences of this all the time; so many posts bloated out with whopping great gaps between every paragraph.

Drives me up the wall when I try to make a post, and then find I have to go back and edit out all my spaces. 😠

On a more significant note:

Could you maybe considder adding a sub-forum, ect. that is intended to act as a line of communication between the community and our government, community (perhaps through the media?), and the leaders of the mental health system (e.g. the APS management)? I'm not sure I can really offer much on how such a chanel might work, but presumably it would involve the senior SANE figures reaching out to all the major players in these fields and asking them to provide liasons who would routinely visit/observe this "community voice" chanel so that they can go back and advise their respective organizations about what the community is struggling with, and what response the community wants to see from them.

Many of us feel that we’ve reached a point where conversations within our own circles, while meaningful, are no longer enough on their own to bring real change. For our lives to truly improve, those with the ability to make a difference need to hear our concerns and choose to act. Unfortunately, the systems and institutions involved can be so large that our voices often struggle to reach them. Official opportunities to advise them on their policies & work are few and far between, all too brief, rarely announced well enough such that you would know their going on, and tend to be so rigidly structured that your lucky if they are inquiring into the matters you actually want to discuss. It's an extremely clumsy and ineffective means of the people in need (us) being able to appeal to the powers that be for whatever it is we need.

What we need is a more open, direct and effective line of communication to the people who govern and shape the world we have to live in. And I can't see any way that could happen aside from some community-based organization with some clout, like SANE, taking the lead to develop the space, and attracting the leaders who need to listen to the people into that space.

Thank you for sharing. We will definitely be taking all of this into consideration as part of our next steps @chibam @Bunniekins @Flutterbug9 @Shaz51 @Bow

Re: would sane consider these changes to the forums

@tyme   If helps in discussion, happy for this exact situation to be used as example

Summary update addressed to you

no insult taken by edit made by moderator.

difference being

1) my message was intended as update for you

2) post by moderator having to be requested to be edited, this having created unnecessary posts, rework, taking mods away from helping and support those you need it.

3) post by mod, contacting false and misleading information about reason for my infusion

if option was there that would have allowed me to have selected for post to be seen only by you (plus mods/PSW), good chance this misunderstanding, unnecessary/irrelevant post, required rework etc could have been avoided.
also allow myself and others to feel comfortable to record similar posts in the future

Involvement by multiple mods and other things related to my post that I addressed to you and only tagged you in is not sitting comfortable with me atm.  Not a pleasant experience

Re: would sane consider these changes to the forums

Thank you for raising these concerns @Flutterbug9

I absolutely hear you. Would you like us to email you?

Re: would sane consider these changes to the forums

Email won’t change anything @tyme

only more waste of time that would be better used to support everyone on the forums

Re: would sane consider these changes to the forums

Please know I'm hearing you. You are important to us and we appreciate this feedback. @Flutterbug9

Re: would sane consider these changes to the forums

Why bother trying to post something specifically to a PSW if this type of thing is going to happen, or risk of it happening, again.

all I did @tyme was chose to do a post to you as summary of recent times.  A message to which a post appears which includes assumption about type of infusion.

Serious question - what can be done that this doesn’t happen again?

Re: would sane consider these changes to the forums

Hey @Flutterbug9 ,

Honestly, I know I have made mistakes in the past. As much as I cannot ensure it won't happen again, I CAN ensure that we will follow up and provide the relevant training to staff.

I absoultely hear the upset this has caused.

Can you think of something we can do to support you at this time? Or something you can do to help you feel a little better?

Here for you.

Re: would sane consider these changes to the forums

Hey @Bunniekins I definitely understand where you are coming from. There has certainly been a change over the years on what is okay to be posted and what isn't ...and different staff certainly 'interpret' the guidelines differently. I have also seen a lot of inconsistency across the forums in what some post and others are (for want of a better word) 'censored' for. I don't have any answers for this despite bringing it up many times. There is also a lot of time and energy put into some threads and some discussions and others very little to no interaction. The current triage system does not work.
